Hello, brilliant minds! Have you ever pondered why we don’t see as many women at the pinnacle in the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)? It’s a pressing issue that the WISE Summit team is passionate about addressing. We’re here to explore the challenges women face in STEM and, more importantly, how we can collectively overcome them. So, let’s embark on this enlightening journey together!
The Current State of Affairs
Did you know that women constitute nearly half of the workforce but only hold about 25% of STEM jobs? This statistic is highlighted in the “By the Numbers” report by the National Center for Women & Information Technology NCWIT(NCWIT, 2021).
And when it comes to leadership roles, the numbers are even more staggering. According to a report by McKinsey & Company, women occupy only 28% of C-suite positions in tech companies McKinsey & Company (McKinsey & Company, 2020). Clearly, there’s a long road ahead, but recognizing the issue is the first step toward change.
Overcoming Barriers
Several obstacles stand in the way of women’s advancement in STEM:
- Implicit Bias: Subtle biases can hinder a woman’s career progression, often without conscious realization.
- Lack of Role Models: Seeing women in leadership roles can inspire others to reach for the stars.
- Work-Life Balance: Striking a balance between a demanding career and personal life is challenging but essential.
